This is the only way Karl Springer had glass added to authentic African Tribal Tables, whether round or rectangular. Several dealers have, new, round "airport tables" - meaning one can pick one up at or on the way to the airport as a souvenir. These have a spinning piece of glass with a pole in the center of the glass, stuck into the center of the table, which Karl NEVER did.

Sculpture Leg Table in Polished Stainless Steel, with a fan shaped 1" clear glass top, some have rectangular glass. This design was was made with either a 10" or 12" diameter leg, with a 150 pound weight inside the leg. Unscrupulous people take 8" diameter legs from four coffee table legs, trying to turn them into this design with some make-shift weights which are not enough, so these can be easily knocked over, causing damage to someones foot or injuring a child who might be running around.

Karl, being from war torn bombed Germany, with sometimes no food, etc. - everything Karl had made was brought to the showroom, if he did like to make more at that point, they were put on the floor for sale, listed for what cost was involved, with a sign on the pieces reading -'ONE OF A KIND' - so as to get the money he spent paid back to make another piece.

Unfortunately, many look-alike copies are in the markets. Many of the finishes are not ones that Karl Springer ever used. Leather covered tables are showing up covered in leathers and snake, in colors that Karl never used. Bizarre coverings such as pony fur and inlays on telephone tables, So, so many fraudulently fake 'signatures' stuck onto pieces of alleged Karl Springer furniture. Simply because something is said to look like a photo in a catalog or magazine has absolutely nothing to do with it's authenticity. More likely than not, being of new manufacture, pretending to be something it is not.
Designers, architects and anyone that purchases a piece of furniture from one of the numerous websites, including those of single mid-century or vintage sellers, auction houses and walk in shops, assume that if they are told an item is a actual vintage piece of designer furniture, watches, estate or new jewelry, art, clothing, etc., Then that it is what it is purported to be by the seller, who only knows what the person they purchased the item from is. |
